Why adopt an OLDER dog?

  1. 1.Potty Training: PUPPIES are clueless and will pee whenever the opportunity knocks.  OLDER DOGS can hold it longer, understand “the look”, and most have been trained before they come into adoption.

  1. 2.To Shoe or WHAT TO CHEW: PUPPIES chew.  They will grab anything their little mouths want to taste or feel. They teethe. What goes in must feel better!   OLDER DOGS have all of their teeth.  Their “teething” days are over, and an occasional chewy is a wonderful treat to thank them for their good manners!

  1. 3.Car Manners: States are getting on the bandwagon, passing laws pertaining to where a dog is allowed to be in a moving vehicle.  PUPPIES will jump everywhere, get into everything, and will most likely want to sit in your lap to drive!   OLDER DOGS know how to sit up and enjoy a relaxing car ride, obeying the rules of the road if a cop pulls up in his uniform!

  1. 4.Walking Manners: PUPPIES don’t “walk”… they craw, jump, dive, wrap themselves up like little mummies in the leash (or worse… wrap YOU up like a mummy with your legs tied together).   OLDER DOGS have acquired the rhythm in walking with someone and walk WITH you, enjoying the sites and companionship.

  1. 5.Less Vet Trips: PUPPIES play with stinging bees, jump into messy trashcans, put their noses into places that the sun don’t shine… and don’t understand danger and what causes pain.   OLDER DOGS have the attitudes “been there, done that” and know better.

  1. 6.Better Sleep: PUPPIES like to play every 45 minutes!  They take “cat naps” and spring up loaded and ready again.  They’re also afraid of the dark, and in a “testing” phase.   OLDER DOGS enjoy a good snooze, and know that tomorrow will be there waiting for them when they awake.

  1. 7.Personality: PUPPIES haven’t begun to mold their personalities yet.  You have NO IDEA what kind of moody or temperamental or even trainable dog you’re getting.   OLDER DOGS wear their personalities openly.  You know what you’re getting when you meet them by watching their eyes and moves.

  1. 8.Patience: PUPPIES… well, need I say more…. for they live in the moment and exciting moments must happen continually!   OLDER DOGS can wait.  They’ll wait for you to return from work.  They’ll wait for their food without howling.  They’ll wait for you to sit on the couch and invite them up.  And they’ll wait for you to love them when you have the time.

  1. 9.Energy: PUPPIES are always on the go/go/go!  Do you really want to keep up with them as they’re continually whipping through the house, grabbing underwear, socks, fine china, jewelry on top of the end tables, drapes that just happen to be hanging low enough to grab….    OLDER DOGS will match YOUR energy.  They know when it’s time to play fetch, and time to warm your feet.

  1. 10.Size: PUPPIES groooooooow!   OLDER DOGS don’t need puppy chow to grow.  You know how big of a bed to buy already and what size toys are appropriate.  They won’t grow out of them.

  1. 11.Compatibility: Puppies have special needs…. they’re just like taking care of a baby, 24/7!   OLDER DOGS are ready to go with the flow and go with you NOW!  Easy packing, no emotional outbreaks!

  1. 12.Bonding & Appreciation: PUPPIES are just discovering what it is to have love.  They live for the moment, and things affect them JUST for that moment… then they move on to the next moving thing.   OLDER DOGS, especially those who have lost their first families, appreciate any love brought their way.  They have the need to “please” you, and want to show their loyalty so they won’t lose you, like the other family that gave them up.
